What Does LASIK Cost

Generally within any economic sphere the price of given commodities and services decreases as time goes by. However, the LASIK cost has not followed this trend as a whole. The reason for this partially being that when one thinks of LASIK surgery, this is not confined to a singular surgery, but rather a whole family of similar procedures.
One major factor in LASIK cost, when thinking about the term generally is the exact procedure and the equipment utilized. If a scalpel is used, for instance, then the cost comes down drastically compared to when a microkeratome is utilized. Yet more expensive is the use of a laser instead of the microkeratome, and then, depending upon which type of laser is used, also accounts for the LASIK cost.
Examples of such lasers that you may hear mentioned in the ophthalmologist's office include the Allegretto Wave (just recently approved by the FDA and so is rather expensive), an excimer laser (a generic term for a group of different beams), and the IntraLase laser, another recent addition to this growing collection of surgical lasers. As each new laser is brought into the ever-expanding field of LASIK, cost increases also follow, allowing for eye surgeons to afford such technology.
However, a boon to this increase in surgical lasers is that the older models which are still not entirely outmoded, not unlike older-model computers, become less of a commodity, and therefore more affordable. The downside of these "antiquated" lasers (which may have been top of the line 7 years previously) is twofold.
One, their use may be abandoned once they are no longer requested by customers. Two (and the reason for the drop in demand from customers) is they simply do not provide the same level of treatment that newer model lasers do. This includes a reduction in post-operation complications and comfort level -to wit, less pain. Keeping up with the Jones' in this case is tantamount to keeping in step with improved sight. The further snag of course being that our pocketbooks must also keep in step with this newer equipment.
However, even with the most qualitative care and advances in the field, LASIK cost can be reduced with a little research and legwork. This is to say, comparison shopping. By scanning newspapers (particularly on Sundays), periodicals, and the internet, more of a better understanding of the range of prices can be quickly apprehended. Further, this knowledge coupled with that of the sales that are offered will also provide an understanding of the basic price scale both generally, and by individual procedure and laser utilized.
Of course, to see an eye care specialist first is prudent. A consultation and eye examination are all important. As each person's eyes are unique, so too are any defects or problems that they may be experiencing. With professional guidance many mistakes can be avoided, including choosing the wrong type of laser surgery, or even an eye surgeon that may be less than appreciable.
It is highly recommended that thought should be given not only to LASIK cost, but also to the reputation and degree of experience that an eye surgeon has. While one surgeon may be a bit more pricey, if s/he puts you at ease, this professional is the better choice over a less expensive doctor with little experience, or whose presence causes nervousness. Peace of mind has no price.
