Understanding LASIK Eye Surgery Risks

LASIK eye surgery risks are questions on the minds of any reasonable person giving serious consideration to such procedure. Our eyes are, after all, the receptacles holding the sense most precious to all but a few of us -and even musicians savor not being blind. This is not to mention that the eyes are some of the most sensitive organs on our bodies, and the thought of inflicting even the tiniest bit of pain there is unthinkable.
Well, if LASIK eye surgery risks weigh so highly on your mind -as well they should, the first factor to weigh in is finding a good eye surgeon. Shop around. Visit a few different eye surgeons. Does he or she make you feel comfortable? When you've found the person that you feel is reliable enough and experienced enough, you will have an eye exam (actually, an eye exam is a good way to gauge your level of comfort with a doctor).
Before even truly worrying about LASIK eye surgery risks, you'll want to know if you're a strong candidate for such a procedure. The reason for this is manifold. Being too young or too old could bar you from this specific procedure, due to the rapidity of eye growth and shape in the instance of youth; and in the weakening of the cornea in the case of growing older. This is not to say that one over sixty or seventy years of age, for instance, is inapplicable to LASIK procedure, as every individual is different.
Other considerations include the existence of certain medical problems such as diabetes. This and other serious conditions can preclude the use of LASIK as a means of treatment (though doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't another suitable surgical procedure available). Yet different types of health problems -most specifically eye disease, may simply postpone surgery, not eliminate it entirely, until the disease is eradicated.
While LASIK eye surgery risks do exist, it should be mentioned that as technological expertise and information sharing amongst medical practitioners grow, the risk of complications diminishes. LASIK surgeons have reported that incidence of complications has dissolved from a 5% incidence of complications in the latter 1990's to a trifling 1% at present.
Nevertheless, though the system is self-ameliorating and the actual procedure is quick and generally quite gentle, LASIK eye surgery risks are still a reality. To define the nature of such problems, we must bear in mind the following terms, for they represent the most common complications.
Irregular astigmatism, while often a problem being sought for treatment of, can also be a LASIK eye surgery risk when the correction is not accurately centered over the eye. This may result in "ghosting" also called "ghost images," or double vision -both problems which are also a normal part of healing after such surgery, and which often ebb away after a short period of time.
Decentered ablations, oversize pupils (when wider than the area treated, that is), diffuse lamellar keratitis, epithelial ingrowths, and irregular corneal flaps all result in visual aberrations including poor night vision, starbursts, halos, double vision, and other similar visual acuity problems. However, many of these problems are of a short-term nature, often resolved with little more than time and eye drops. Other LASIK eye surgery risks, such as the condition simply referred to as "dry eye" may be remedied through further surgical procedures in extreme cases.
