Seeking a LASIK M.D. that you can trust and feel comfortable with? If so, you're on the right path. Whenever having surgery of any type performed, it is important to know that the surgeon you will be wish to hire will in turn employ every facet of his or her knowledge to the absolute ends of their ability. Under the section "Find an eye MD" is a decent of information that will be helpful in defining the standards as to what exactly makes a LASIK M.D. worth his or her salt. Yet another such group is the Council for Refractive Surgery Quality Assurance. This organization even offers a list which it recommends be written down and asked of the surgeon before agreeing to surgery.

Some of these questions include the following. How many years of experience does the LASIC M.D. have? Obviously, a more experienced surgeon is preferable. How many procedures of the exact same type that you'll have performed on yourself has the surgeon done? Using the exact same equipment (i.e. the same type of laser)?

What percentage of his/her patients have gained 20/40 sight or better after the operation (based upon the UCVA -the Snellan Uncorrected Visual Acuity standard)? A caveat from the CRSQA is that if this figure exceeds 90%, which is the standard average, then be wary as a higher percentage may be untrue. Further, what percentage of patients achieved 20/20 or better? Here the average is 50%. Should a LASIK M.D. claim a higher percentage, simply ask her to see proof (she may just be incredibly talented at her job).

Can the LASIC M.D. provide you with a list of names and accompanying contact data of former patients who've had the exact same procedure performed (and also with the same optical problem, likewise). For even deeper digging, ask more trenchant questions such as if the LASIC M.D. has ever had his/her malpractice insurance denied. Has the surgeon ever had his/her medical license suspended or outright revoked? Are there any felonious charges that the LASIK M.D. has been charged for?

These questions may seem a bit tough, even rude, yet bear in mind that this line of questioning is par for the course in the medical field, even if rarely done. As well, it is categorically your RIGHT to ask such questions. Best of luck.
