Learn About LASIK Plus

Defined Tag: Lasik Plus.
The terms LASIK is heard a lot, but what does it really mean? The name signifies Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, quite a mouthful at any time of the day. However, while this name is indicative of eye surgery, it truly represents multiple forms of such surgery. Now however, a new expression is in town, LASIK Plus.
In all cases, these names describe different types of refractive surgery meant to correct visual acuity and reduce or eliminate the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses. Whether considering LASIK or LASIK Plus, in each case certain treatments are available such as PRK, LASEK (note the spelling change), Radial Keratotomy, and corneal implantation.
However, how does LASIK Plus differ? This process is different simply by the advanced analytic technology utilized. Different eye clinics use different terms for this and also ever-newer eye exam devices. One such cutting edge line of machines utilized now are the "wavefront" devices. When these diagnostic devices are employed, the general term for such eye care is elevated to LASIK Plus.
These "wavefront" machines were originally employed by NASA to reduce abnormalities in the lenses of telescopes but are now utilized to diagnose human lenses. The nature of the human eye is such that there can be both lower and upper aberrations in the cornea of the eye. While most LASIK pre-operation exams look for the lower aberrations, only LASIK Plus searches for the higher aberrations, those more difficult to detect.
The gist of the system is simplicity itself. Flat waves of light are sent into the eye and then bounce back outside the eye where they are "read" by a wavefront machine, almost in the same way RADAR works with sound. Depending upon how great (or minimal) an aberration is determines how the light will come out of the eye thus informing the optician as to the level and type of problem with each eye.
Any problem that is found will be quantified in a computer diagram showing just what sort of problems may exist (as explained by a doctor, of course). An ideal "map" of the eye will generally be flat (though the human cornea itself is not) and symmetrical, while a wavefront map showing a rising flap of light, often with undulations and dips as well as multiple colors indicate additional aberrations.
The beauty of LASIK Plus is the feeling of extra protection that it gives. Not only is the examination more accurate, but it is also more specific to a person's individual ocular problems. Therefore, the probability exists that when the time comes for the actual surgery, it will be successful. Additionally, greater success should be achieved than normal in that yet every aberration will be dealt with in a more in-depth, personalized manner.
Of course, with this greater attention to the individual and the individual's exact problems, comes a greater expense. This too is a result of the technology itself. However, within a short period of time as more and more eye specialists and their clients come to rely upon this new technology, the prices will drop.
